Gallia County Ohio Fair Festival

Gallia County Ohio Fair Festival

In Gallipolis, the seat of Gallia County on the Ohio River, the county fair answers to a name that tells you exactly what it is. The fair’s own books call it the Gallia County Junior Fair, and the whole week is built around the county’s young exhibitors: the barns, show rings, pageant stage and closing sales belong, first and foremost, to 4-H, FFA and Scout project work. Visitors still get the full fair week — pulls, motocross, derbies, music on the main stage, and a midway folded into the gate — but the centre of gravity never leaves the young people who spent the year preparing what they bring to Jackson Pike. It is a young summer fair, straddling July into August, frank in its own books about what it charges and what is still on the move.

Gallia County Ohio Fair Festival

A Fair That Calls Itself Junior

Two name forms circulate, and both are correct in their own layers: the fair’s own books, site and entry system call it the Gallia County Junior Fair, while the state schedules, the Auditor’s record and the Extension layer call it the Gallia County Fair. Neither should be rewritten into the other, and no third form invented. In practice the junior styling means the book is a junior-fair book entire, organised around youth departments, with no senior fair or adult open division documented in any fair-side layer. That is not a gap in the record; it is the fair’s identity.

The organiser is the Gallia County Agricultural Society, a Chapter 1711 county agricultural society corporation governed by a Board of Directors of fifteen directors serving staggered three-year terms, elected from Gallia County residents. Its working forms — the Fair Board in the commercial and grounds layers, the Youth Fair Board and Junior Fair Board in the book’s contents layers — never replace the Society as organiser. The officers named in the 2025 book (President Kelley Fellure, Vice President Brian Hendrickson, Secretary Tim Massie, Treasurer Brent Eastman) belong to the 2024–2025 roster in that book, not to any timeless board. Extension supplies the 4-H machinery behind the entries, and the Junior Livestock Sale Committee handles the sale week, but neither is the organiser.

From a One-Day Show to Jackson Pike

The Society’s founding stands in the state audit record as 1950, and the fair’s own history begins in the same summer: a one-day show for FFA and 4-H youngsters on an equipment dealer’s lot, described on the fair’s history page as the Junior Fair’s actual beginning. A two-day fair on the Gallipolis park front followed in 1951, and the fair sat at Holzer Airport from 1952 through 1955. In 1955 the Evans Grocery Company donated sixteen acres for a permanent fairground, and the fair has been on the new site since 1956, growing building by building: the Activities Building in 1958, the Commercial Building in 1961, eight parking acres across the creek in 1960, and seventeen camping acres in 1965.

The fair’s own history also records a Relocation Committee appointed in 1999 and the purchase of the 158-acre Evans farm bordering the grounds, bringing the fair board’s total to over 250 acres in that layer. But the relocation is still a project, not a completed fact: the 2025 book records a new livestock building under construction and a move in progress, driven by the flood-plain problem at the donated 1950s grounds. Every dated layer fetched — the 2023 press listing, the 2024 schedule and audit layers, the 2025 book, and the 2026 entry and schedule layers — still places the fair at 189 Jackson Pike.

For a useful comparison, see the Fulton County Ohio Fair Festival for another county festival.

The 2025 book bills the event the 76th annual Gallia County Junior Fair, a billing belonging to its year alone. Counted naively from a 1950 beginning, 2025 would bill higher, so the count starts from something no layer fetched states, and no founding, continuous run or edition for any other year may be derived from it. The Auditor’s 1950 Society founding and the history page’s 1950 beginning are two layers about two different things, not a licence to do arithmetic. No Gallia County fair before 1950 is documented anywhere fetched.

What to Expect

Livestock at the Centre

The competitive heart of the week is the youth livestock programme. The 2025 book’s departments run from field crops through dairy and beef cattle, sheep, swine, goats, saddle horses, small animals and poultry, dog projects and llamas, with general projects and skill-a-thon contests alongside. Shows fill the Livestock Arena and Show Arena, seating over four hundred, and the judging moves breed by breed: swine, rabbit, poultry, goat and sheep breeding on opening day, horse shows and swine showmanship Tuesday, beef breeding and horse speed Wednesday, feeder calf and dairy Thursday, market classes building toward Saturday’s sales. Peewee showmanship, the Kiddie Tractor Pull and Cloverbud events give the youngest children rings of their own.

The Main Stage Week

The Holzer Main Stage carries the fair’s ceremonial and musical week. The 2025 Official Program opens the fair there at six on Monday evening, after the three county high-school bands have played, with the Little Miss, Little Mister and Queen contests sharing the stage. Tuesday brings gospel from The Carriers and Stephen McWhirter, Wednesday Phil Vassar, Thursday A Girl Named Tom, Friday The Last Hurrah, and Saturday the Gallia Sings Contest and a Taylor Swift tribute.

Pulls, Motocross and Dirt Drags

The Pulling Track is the fair’s loudest address: Tuesday’s 2025 bill runs 4-Wheel Drive Truck and Semi Pulls, Wednesday the Field Stock Tractor and Modified Tractor Pull, Friday the OSTPA sanctioned pull, and Saturday the Garden Tractor Pull before the derbies. Monday’s Fast Traxx Motocross opens the grandstand week and Thursday adds dirt drag racing. The derby promoter in the 2025 book is JK Promotions, a contractor, not an organiser.

Pageants, Contests and Small Stages

Beyond livestock and track, the week is crowded with community contests: the Pretty Baby Contest, the Kiddie Tractor Pull, Master Exhibitor judging, the Gallia Sings Contest and the queen, Little Miss and Little Mister pageants. The 2024 book places Gallia Sings on Saturday, August 3, 2024, at the Holzer Main Stage, with the derby running at the track at the same hour.

The Closing Sales

Saturday belongs to the market sales, billed in the 2025 programme as the 13th Annual Market Goat, 65th Annual Market Hog, 67th Annual Market Lamb and 74th Annual Market Steer Sales — the sales’ own counts, never fair editions, and the real climax of the exhibitors’ year. The derbies — Power Wheels, Mini Cars, Street Stock Big Cars and MWFA classes — close the track week beside them.

Getting to the Grounds

Gallia County Ohio Fair Festival

The fairgrounds sit at 189 Jackson Pike in Gallipolis. Its buildings include the Show Arena, the Holzer Main Stage, the Gray Pavilion and the Pulling Track, with the CH McKenzie Ag Center as the board’s meeting place. The Extension office at 111 Jackson Pike is nearby, not the fairgrounds.

What Admission Cost, and What It Does Not Yet Say

The honest statement for the current year is an absence: no 2026 gate, season-pass or parking price is published in any fair-own layer, so no 2026 price is printed here. The complete ladder is the fair’s own 2025 book, identically its 2022 book: ten dollars daily admission — unusually among Ohio fairs, including rides and entertainment — thirty-dollar season passes, non-voting and not exchangeable for Society membership, free parking, under-twos free for admission only, and seniors sixty and older free on Tuesday only.

Two lines are routinely misread. The two-dollar Society membership is voting only, with no admission. The thirty-dollar Concession line is a concession credential, not a visitor price. The Auditor’s layer independently confirms the ten-dollar gate inside 2024, recording 690 tickets sold at Gate 2 on July 31, 2024, at ten dollars per ticket — an audit confirmation, not a published ladder. Derby participant money (one-hundred-dollar car entry including one driver admission, fifteen-dollar pit passes, five-dollar Powerwheels entry, twenty-five-dollar mower entry) and Gallia Sings fees (ten-dollar solo, fifteen-dollar duet) are not gate admission either.

Camping on Designated Ground

Camping exists at these grounds in the fair’s own layers, on narrower terms than visitors sometimes assume: the 2025 book’s rules permit overnight camping only in areas designated by the Society’s Board of Directors, and the camping area traces to seventeen acres acquired in 1965. No camping price, hookup specification, site count or public-versus-participant term is published in any fair-side layer, so none is printed here. Relocation layers plan for the campgrounds to move with the fairgrounds to the Evans farm property, but that is a plan, not a completed move.

A Week at the Fair

Following the 2025 programme, the week has a natural shape. Monday opens with the dog show, breeding shows, the high-school bands, the official opening on the Main Stage, motocross, and the Little Miss, Little Mister and Queen contests. Tuesday pairs the horse show and swine showmanship with truck and semi pulls and gospel. Wednesday pairs beef breeding and horse speed with the tractor pull and an evening concert. Thursday pairs feeder calf and dairy judging with Cloverbud Graduation, the horse fun show, market beef and dirt drag racing. Friday pairs the Pretty Baby Contest and Kiddie Tractor Pull with the sanctioned pull and an evening band. Saturday closes with the market sales, the Garden Tractor Pull, the derbies, Gallia Sings and the tribute show. Later years will vary the bill; the shape — livestock first, stage and track around it, sales at the end — is settled.

How Gallia Differs from Its Neighbours

Three things mark Gallia out beside the ordinary Ohio county fair. First, the junior-fair structure is total: no senior or open division exists, so every department, sale and pageant answers to the same youth purpose. Second, the admission system runs the other way from most fairs: in the 2022 and 2025 books the gate price includes rides and entertainment, and the free days are narrow and named — Tuesday for seniors, admission only for the under-twos. Third, the fair is young and says so: a 1950 beginning, sixteen donated acres in 1955, a permanent site from 1956, and a relocation still in progress, all printed in its own layers without borrowing age from the town around it.

Before You Go

  • Plan for 189 Jackson Pike; do not follow new-fairgrounds directions until a published layer announces a move.
  • Expect a six-day summer week straddling July and August, Monday through Saturday.
  • Check the current year’s gate before travelling: no 2026 price is published, so do not assume the 2025 ladder still holds.
  • Remember the 2025 terms if they return: ten dollars at the gate including rides and entertainment, thirty-dollar season passes, free parking, under-twos free for admission only, seniors free Tuesday only.
  • Do not mistake the two-dollar Society membership for admission: it is voting only, with no admission attached.
  • Camp only in areas designated by the Society’s Board, and expect no published camping rate or hookup list.
  • Build your day around the barns and Show Arena first, then the Main Stage and the Pulling Track.
  • Stay for Saturday: the market sales and derbies are the week’s true close.

Beyond the Fairgrounds

Gallipolis itself rewards an unhurried visit. The county seat sits on the Ohio River, and the fair week spills into the town: riverfront walks, local restaurants and shops, and the easy pace of a small river city in high summer. Many families make a week of it rather than a day.

Why This Fair Matters

The fair’s significance is not measured in acreage or attendance but in what it completes. For the county’s young exhibitors, it is the goal and end result of a year of project work — feeding schedules, record books and showmanship practice becoming a public result, judged in the open and sold at auction on Saturday. For the Agricultural Society, founded in 1950 in the audit record, it is the purpose the Society exists to serve. For the town, it is the week Gallipolis gathers around its own young people.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this fair only for young exhibitors?

The competitive programme is a junior-fair programme entire: 4-H, FFA, FCCLA and Scout projects, youth livestock departments, showmanship and skill-a-thon contests, and youth pageants. Visitors of every age attend, and the stage, pulls, derbies and midway are public entertainment.

What did admission cost in the most recent published book?

In the fair’s own 2025 book, identically its 2022 book, daily admission was ten dollars including rides and entertainment, season passes thirty dollars, parking free, under-twos free for admission only, and seniors sixty and older free on Tuesday only. No 2026 price is published in any fair-own layer, so no current price is printed here.

Has the fair moved to a new fairgrounds?

No. The 2025 book records a new livestock building under construction and a move in progress, but every dated layer still places the fair at 189 Jackson Pike. Until a published layer announces a completed move with a new address, Jackson Pike is where the fair is held.

When is the fair held?

An annual six-day summer fair, Monday through Saturday, straddling July into August. The 2026 run is August 3 through August 8, the 2025 run was July 28 through August 2, and the 2024 run July 29 through August 3.

What to Expect From the Next Gallia County Ohio Fair Festival

How often is Gallia County Ohio Fair Festival held?

When is the next Gallia County Ohio Fair Festival?

The next documented run is August 3 through August 8, 2026, in the entry-system and state schedule layers, agreeing with the fair site’s first countdown layer.

Will the dates change?

The dates move within the summer window from year to year, so each year’s run should be checked in that year’s own layers rather than assumed from the last one.

The Gallia County Junior Fair does not pretend to be older, larger or grander than it is: a young fair, run by its Agricultural Society, built around the county’s youth, held on Jackson Pike for six summer days, its rides folded into its gate in the years its books cover, its future home honestly a work in progress. Come for the livestock, stay for the pulls and pageants, and close the week at the sales.
