Preble County Ohio Fair Festival

Eaton holds this fair twice over: it is the county seat, and it is the fair town. The Preble County Fair runs for eight days across the turn of July into August at the Preble County Fairgrounds on South Franklin Street, under the Preble County Agricultural Society.

About the Fair in Eaton

A Famous Fair With a Plain Name

The event’s styling is simply Preble County Fair. The Auditor’s reports word it the Famous Preble County Fair, but that is a styling in its layers, never a separate event. The organiser is the Preble County Agricultural Society, printed exactly in that form. Its working forms stand in their layers: PCAS, the Board of Directors, and the Junior Fair Board as junior machinery, never the organiser, and the county is not financially accountable for the Society.

The Society’s board is thirteen directors in the Auditor’s layers, on staggered three-year terms elected by the membership. The 2026 book’s board list agrees: thirteen directors across the township and city seats, terms expiring October 31 in 2026, 2027 and 2028 cohorts. The 2026 book names President Rodney Mann, Vice-President Clinnie Stevenson, Secretary Heather Abrams and Treasurer Andy Campbell, 2026 book officers only.

History

A Society, a First Fair, and a Count That Runs From Neither

The Ohio Auditor’s reports record the Society as founded in April 1850 to operate an annual agricultural fair, from 2001 through the 2021 audit. April 1850 is the Society’s founding in the state record, never a first-fair year, and no fair-side layer states a founding year.

The county tourism record, in the Visit Preble County guides for 2020 and 2021, claims the Society was founded in April 1850, the first fair was held in 1851 at the county courthouse with the livestock show on Bruce’s Commons, and after moves to various locations, in 1866 the Society purchased forty-five acres of the present site at 722 South Franklin Street, on State Route 122 in that layer’s route form, never restated as the Society’s own published history. The forty-five acres is the 1866 purchase figure, never the present surveyed size.

For a useful comparison, see the Portage County Ohio Fair Festival for another county festival.

Billings in their layers: 171st in 2021, 175th Edition in 2025, 176th Edition in 2026. The chain steps year for year from 2021 through 2026, and counted inclusively it runs from the tourism layer’s 1851 first fair, not from the Auditor’s April 1850 founding, which would count one higher; no layer states what the count starts from, and no founding year, first-fair year, edition number or continuous-run proof may be derived from any link in it.

In 2020, state guidelines imposed shortly before the fair prohibited rides, games and Senior Fair activities, admitting locally only immediate family of Junior Fair exhibitors during specific events: a limited, junior-fair-centred year, never a normal full fair and never a flat cancellation. The Auditor’s reports across 2001 through 2021 word it that during the fair, harness races are held, culminating in the Speed Program, but that name stands in those state-record layers only; county-era layers are county facts, never the fair’s age.

What to Expect

The Grandstand Week, Priced by the Seat

Every grandstand price below governs 2026 only. The week opens August 1 with the fair parade lining up on Cherry Street at ten in the morning, followed by a Veterans Memorial Service at the grandstands, and closes August 8 with a second derby. The prices run in pairs, grandstand and infield: demolition derbies ten and twenty, school bus derby ten and twenty, KOI drag racing ten and fifteen, rodeo and live music twenty grandstand, antique and truck and tractor pulls ten and fifteen, NTPA regional pull ten and twenty. The Kiddie Tractor Pull on the closing Saturday carries free admission at the grandstand.

The Junior and Open Rings All Week

All week in the 2026 book, the department structure runs deep. The junior side covers beef, dairy, dog, goat, horse including roping, barrel and youth rodeo classes, llama and alpaca, poultry, rabbit, sheep and swine, with royalty and the Sale of Champions. The open side covers antiques, farm products, household arts, floral and visual arts. Premiums are competition money, never programme prices. Venues include the Expo Building and Expansion, Bruner Arena, the Bullen Equestrian Center, the Toney Building and Rotary Junction, with the grandstand and track and campgrounds by the Expo and horse barns.

Harness Racing on Sunday Afternoon

Harness racing is current and documented for 2026 in four agreeing layers. The book carries its own Harness Racing section and committee. The daily schedule carries OCRA harness racing Sunday at one in the afternoon with free grandstand admission. The state schedule line carries the harness-racing asterisk, and the horsemen’s listings carry Eaton on August 2 at one in the afternoon.

Planning Your Visit

Getting In, and What the 2026 Book Charges

Every figure below governs 2026 only. General admission is seven dollars at the gate and five dollars online plus a processing fee. The Membership Ticket is twenty-five dollars, for Preble County residents only, aged eighteen and older, serving as a gate pass for the entire fair and carrying a vote in the Friday fair board election, with sales until Friday, July 31, 2026 in the web page’s layer. The Weekly Pass is thirty dollars and serves as a gate pass for the entire fair. Junior Fair exhibitors enter free with a wristband, available at the fair office after July 1, 2026, with pickup by Monday, July 27, 2026, distribution only through advisors, and a ten-dollar replacement fee if lost or stolen. That ten-dollar figure is a replacement layer, never a ride price.

Preble County Ohio Fair Festival

The 2025 book’s figures govern 2025 only, never fused with 2026’s into a timeless price: general admission seven dollars at the gate, and the farm-products layer’s PCAS Membership Ticket at twenty-five dollars or Weekly Pass at thirty dollars plus one dollar for each item entered. The 2026 book’s free parking is a parking term alone, never inflated into free admission. Ride money is its own layer: all-day ride wristbands at twenty-five dollars daily, Saturday rides run to eleven at night, other days to ten or eleven.

Where to Stay the Week

Camping is documented in the Society’s own 2026 fair book as a priced, ruled system, and every figure governs 2026 only. Full hook-up camping is three hundred fifty dollars, partial hook-up three hundred dollars, generator camping one hundred dollars and primitive camping one hundred dollars. Full hook-up means electricity, water and sewage; partial means electricity and water; generator sites allow generators and primitive sites do not. Full and partial hook-up payment must be received by May 15, with no exceptions. Generator and primitive lots go on sale from eight in the morning on June 1, 2026, with generator lots thirty feet by thirty feet in that layer. Waiting-list campers must hold a Membership or Weekly Pass and re-verify before May 15.

A Membership or Weekly Pass is required in addition to the permit; camping is not included with any pass. One camper unit per site, placed by eight in the morning on the Saturday of the fair or the site is forfeited. Utility hookups run from the weekend prior to the fair through the first Sunday following it, and all campers must be removed no later than August 16. No one under eighteen stays overnight without adult supervision; no campfires or open fires. Live-in livestock trailers need permanent living quarters and clean livestock quarters, and tents are allowed only in the Generator and Primitive areas. Camping curfew equals the Midway curfew; the speed limit is five miles per hour; no subleasing; spots transfer only to an immediate family member with Society approval; pop-ups are barred in the Expo and Horse Arena campgrounds.

Timing the Week, and the Days Before It

The fair’s season is the turn of July into August, and no layer words it as an August fair or a July fair alone. The 2026 span runs Saturday, August 1 to Saturday, August 8, in the Society’s own 2026 book and the state schedule agreeing, with the state line carrying the harness-racing asterisk. The book’s daily schedule runs Thursday, July 30 and Friday, July 31 as pre-fair check-in and judging days before the Saturday opening with its parade. Those are check-in days in the book’s layer, never fair days. The 2025 span runs Saturday, July 26 to Saturday, August 2 in the Society’s own 2025 book, billed the 175th Edition. One year’s span is never printed as another’s.

A Saturday-to-Saturday Shape

One Opening Saturday, Walked in Order

Follow the 2026 book’s own shape. The opening Saturday brings the Cherry Street parade into the fairgrounds, the veterans service and derby. Sunday brings the open shows and free-grandstand harness racing; Monday the junior shows and school bus derby; Tuesday the market shows and rodeo night; Wednesday the senior dance and drag racing; Thursday the cook-off and pulls. Friday is sale day, and the closing Saturday returns to the Kiddie Tractor Pull and derby.

Comparison

Where the Layers Refuse to Agree

The Auditor’s April 1850 founding and the tourism layer’s 1851 first fair are two different claims, and the edition billings run from the first fair’s year rather than the founding year, so no founding or first-fair year may be derived from the billings. The 1866 purchase of forty-five acres is a purchase figure in the tourism layer, not a present-day measurement, and the grounds’ current size is simply not stated in any fair-side layer fetched.

Checklist

  • Season: the turn of July into August, never a July fair or an August fair alone
  • 2026 book only: seven dollars at the gate, five dollars online plus a processing fee, parking free, children eight and under free
  • Camping pass rule: a Membership or Weekly Pass is required in addition to the permit, never instead of it
  • Pre-fair days: July 30 and 31, 2026 are check-in and judging days, not fair days
  • History in layers: April 1850 is the audited founding, 1851 is the tourism layer’s first fair, and the billings prove neither

Beyond the Fairgrounds

The parade lines up on Cherry Street and moves into the fairgrounds at the grandstand. The grounds’ year-round rentals and monthly flea market are grounds business, never fair programme.

Why an Eight-Day Fair Still Works

A Week the County Can Actually Use

A county agricultural society with thirteen directors runs an eight-day fair that still joins a parade, livestock shows, a sale, a grandstand card and a race into one week. The membership ticket doubles as a vote in the Society’s own election. And the history, told in layers that will not harmonise, is part of its character: a Society founded in April 1850 in the state record, a first fair in 1851 in the county’s tourism record, a present site bought in 1866, and edition billings that step year by year without ever proving a continuous run.
