Allegheny County Pennsylvania Three Rivers Arts Festival
The Allegheny County Pennsylvania Three Rivers Arts Festival is the Three Rivers Arts Festival, an annual downtown Pittsburgh celebration of music, visual art and performance staged each early June, and it is not a county fair at all. No livestock, midway or fairground element appears in any layer behind it, and no Allegheny County fair was found in any of them; the county in this title marks the map, not the event’s kind. The record holds a Pittsburgh Cultural Trust production, free in edition after edition, on a footprint reshaped yearly.

Three Names, One Producer, No Fairground
The festival answers to three name forms standing unmerged in their layers: Three Rivers Arts Festival, the plain form of its own site and its Vision and History pages; Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival, the sponsor-prefixed form of its About page, its own 2026 frequently asked questions and the Trust’s 2025 event layer, naming the same festival, never a second one; and TRAF, its own web abbreviation.
One organiser stands behind all three: the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, the body it is a production of in its About layer and its presenter in the Trust’s 2025 layer. Dollar Bank, carried in the sponsor form and on the Dollar Bank Main Stage and Dollar Bank Stage, is title sponsor, never the organiser. Giant Eagle names the Giant Eagle Creativity Zone, a family-activity area; the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra performs as an act in 2024 and 2026; Associated Artists of Pittsburgh partners on the 2026 juried exhibition in one guide layer; the Buncher Company and Alco owned the riverfront lots used for one year in 2025. The Women’s Committee of the Carnegie Museum of Art, the 1960 founder, belongs to history, not the present tense, and the Trust’s takeover year is unsettled, secondary layers giving 2009 and a history journal 2008, unmerged.

Founded in 1960 on the Festival’s Own Statement
The founding claim used here is the festival’s own and no other. Its Vision and History layer states directly that it was founded in 1960 by the Women’s Committee of the Carnegie Museum of Art, that it has presented more than ten thousand visual and performing artists, and that it has entertained millions. Its About layer agrees, dating its free admission to that founding in 1960. The edition billings, a sixty-third annual in 2022, a sixty-fifth in 2024, a sixty-sixth annual in 2025 and a sixty-seventh annual in 2026, are billing only, never subtracted from.
The same layer’s honour roll runs to Ella Fitzgerald, Phillip Glass, Steven Reich and Smokey Robinson in music, Allen Ginsberg and Spalding Gray in literature, and Otto Piene, Louise Nevelson, Keith Haring and Nam June Paik in visual art, none a recent programme entry. Secondary layers add a four-day first festival at the Point with two hundred twenty-three artists, ten days by 1964, a first Artist Market in 1971, and a 1982 expansion to seventeen days in a history journal.
For a useful comparison, see the Adams County Pennsylvania South Mountain Fair Festival for another county festival.
What to Expect
Each edition below stands in its own year’s layers.
A Footprint That Refuses to Sit Still
The festival holds no single fairground, and its ground plan is a different document each year. In 2024 it lay along Fort Duquesne Boulevard in the Cultural District, the layers disagreeing even on the main stage corner, Ninth Street in one, Stanwix Street in another; the Artist Market ran along both sides of the boulevard between Sixth and Ninth Streets and onto the Rachel Carson Bridge, with the Giant Eagle Foundation Backyard at Eighth and Penn. In 2025 it decamped for one year only to riverfront lots at the 15th Street Plaza along Waterfront Place in the Strip District. In 2026 its own pages settle it at Arts Landing, the Trust-operated Cultural District civic space described as its long-term home, with great lawn and permanent stage, yet no single street address attaches: a secondary layer gives Eighth Street and Penn Avenue, numbered Penn Avenue and Liberty Avenue forms conflict, and the Liberty Avenue number is the Trust’s office address, never the grounds. The 2026 exhibition venue is likewise two unmerged forms, 820 Gallery on Liberty Avenue and SPACE Gallery.
The 2024 Edition: Ten Days on the Boulevard
Trust-derived layers give 2024 its fullest shape: May 31 to June 9, ten days from noon to 9 p.m. daily, billed as ten days of free art and music. Featured concerts ran 7:30 to 9 p.m. nightly on the Dollar Bank Main Stage: Pokey LaFarge, Los Lonely Boys, Martha Redbone and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in the opening days, then Nicole Zuraitis (Tuesday, June 4), Ozomatli (Wednesday, June 5), Say She She (Thursday, June 6), Doom Flamingo (Friday, June 7), the Sugarhill Gang and the Furious Five (Saturday, June 8) and Ben Folds (Sunday, June 9). Those layers add gallery exhibitions, public art on the Rachel Carson Bridge, an Artist Market of more than three hundred artists (noon to 8 p.m.), a Giant Eagle Creativity Zone (noon to 6 p.m.), Backyard and Acoustic stages, and the Anthropology of Motherhood exhibition (noon to 8 p.m.).
The 2025 Edition: Four Days by the River
The Trust’s own 2025 layer cuts the festival to four days, June 5 to 8, because, per a Pittsburgh magazine account quoting the Trust’s artist application, downtown construction of the permanent home forced the shorter run; the truncated shape is that year’s alone, and its stage served one year only. The four nights ran Megan Paullet and The HR Department and Las Cafeteras (Thursday), Tiera Kennedy and Preservation Hall Jazz Band (Friday), Souls of Mischief and Cautious Clay (Saturday), and Lisa Loeb and Suzanne Vega (Sunday). The Artist Market kept noon to 8 p.m. hours daily; exhibitions and film joined the programme; ballet, garba and dance-battle programming filled family hours; and the Creativity Zone and a YMCA Magical Community Garden ran noon to 6 p.m.
The 2026 Edition: Two Weekends and a Pause
Its own pages bring it home to Arts Landing for seven days in two blocks, June 5 to 7 and June 11 to 14, 2026, with a midweek pause, June 8, 9 and 10 not festival days in that layer, never a continuous run. Dollar Bank Stage headliners started at 7:30 p.m.: the Spin Doctors (Friday, June 5), The Pharcyde (Saturday, June 6), Trousdale (Sunday, June 7), Buffalo Rose (Thursday, June 11), The War and Treaty (Friday, June 12), the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (Saturday afternoon, June 13) with Delfeayo Marsalis and the Uptown Jazz Orchestra that evening, and Joan Osborne (Sunday, June 14), one news layer spelling her Joan Osbourne against the others’ Osborne, unmerged. Add the world premiere of Squonk’s Joy Machine in five opening-weekend performances, BANDALOOP’s The Sky is Not the Limit on the BNY Visitor Center façade on June 12 and 13, a Dance Battle billed in its twelfth year and a Drum Circle. One guide layer counts three hundred fifty market artists, unmerged beside 2024’s three-hundred-plus.
Planning Your Visit
Free Is the Policy, in the Festival’s Own Words
The festival states its admission policy without hedging. Its own 2026 frequently asked questions answer the ticket question directly: all Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival events are free and open to everyone, and no tickets are required, with no ticketed exception stated. The years around it agree, 2024 and 2025 layers billing it free outright. No ticket, gate, wristband, premium-viewing or per-concert price exists for this festival in any year’s record, and pages elsewhere offering tickets to it are contradicted by its own questions page. The Trust does sell tickets all year to Broadway, dance and theatre presentations in the same district, but those are its separate presenting programme, never festival components. Money still changes hands inside: food courts, alcohol for purchase on site in its questions page, merchandise at an Information Hub, artwork for sale across the Artist Market, all purchases only, never admission, and none required to attend.

The Artists’ Money Belongs to 2013
The only artist-side price ladder in the record is old. A Trust announcement republished in a 2013 theatre-news layer sets the Artist Market application fee at thirty-five dollars per medium, booth fees from three hundred forty to four hundred ten dollars, artist awards of up to ten thousand dollars that year, and the juried exhibition prizes: Best in Show at two thousand five hundred dollars, three Juror’s Choice Awards at five hundred dollars each, a People’s Choice Award at five hundred dollars. Every figure is fenced to 2013; no application or booth fee for 2024, 2025 or 2026 appears in any layer, so the modern fee is unpublished, and sponsorship and hospitality packages run by custom quotation, no published price.
Parking, Beds and the Camping That Is Not There

The festival’s own accessibility layer recommends the Theater Square Garage and publishes no rate, and no other layer gives a parking price; no outside garage, meter or parking-app rate may stand in for one. Camping: no campsite, camper, tent, recreational-vehicle or overnight-parking term appears in its About, questions, accessibility or sponsorship layers, the Trust’s 2025 event layer or any modern programme layer, and no Pittsburgh-area campground may be presented as a festival facility.
One Long Day, Modelled on Saturday, June 13, 2026
The 2026 edition’s second Saturday shows how the pieces stack. Start among the Artist Market rows at Arts Landing and its galleries. The afternoon belongs to the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the 2026 layers’ one daytime headliner, before BANDALOOP’s second façade day puts The Sky is Not the Limit on the BNY Visitor Center, and Delfeayo Marsalis and the Uptown Jazz Orchestra close the night at 7:30 p.m.
Other Three Rivers, and the Fair That Is Not There
Two other festivals carry pieces of this name and none of this festival. Fort Wayne, Indiana’s Three Rivers Festival is a separate mid-July festival under its own organisers; none of its dates, acts or prices belongs to Pittsburgh. The Three Rivers Water Festival, at Three Rivers in Michigan, is that town’s festival, and its booth-space forms, fifty dollars and eighty dollars in its chamber layer, are never this festival’s Artist Market fees. At home, the Trust’s Broadway series, Dance Council, First Night Pittsburgh, Gallery Crawls and theatre presentations share only the producer; Point State Park’s Regatta, Juneteenth, Pride and Fourth of July gatherings, only a historic address.
Checklist
- Plan around the midweek pause in split-weekend editions, three days in 2026
- Leave ticket money at home; every event is free and no ticket is required
- Travel with the current year’s footprint, not last year’s; the site changed in each documented year
- Treat any page selling tickets to this festival as contradicted by the festival itself
- Book a hotel or plan the trip home; no camping attaches to this festival
Beyond the Festival Grounds
The Trust also presents a year-round, separately ticketed programme of Broadway tours, dance and stage productions across this downtown district. Point State Park and the Gateway Center stand in history layers as former longtime homes, the city’s memory rather than the current address. The county government sits in this same city, named in the county’s own Emergency Operations Plan as the county seat; its Grant Street offices address is the county’s, never a festival address.
Why This Festival Matters
Few American arts festivals match this combination: a 1960 founding stated by the festival itself, more than ten thousand artists presented, and a gate price of nothing kept on the Trust’s own wording from founding to the 2026 questions page. It shrank to four days under construction pressure in 2025 and returned across two weekends in a permanent home in 2026, its honour roll running from Ella Fitzgerald to Nam June Paik. In a queue of county fairs it is the city entry: a large, free, artist-centred festival in a county seat’s open streets.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Three Rivers Arts Festival a county fair?
No. The verified event is a downtown Pittsburgh arts festival of concerts, exhibitions, dance, public art and an Artist Market, with no livestock, agricultural, midway or fairground element in any layer, and no county-fair event for Allegheny County was found behind the title. The county’s name records where it happens: Pittsburgh, the county seat.
How much do tickets to the Three Rivers Arts Festival cost?
There are no tickets to buy. The festival’s own 2026 questions page states that all Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival events are free and open to everyone, no tickets required, with 2024 and 2025 layers billing it free alike. Food, drink, merchandise and artwork inside are ordinary purchases; the Trust’s ticketed theatre productions are a separate programme.
Where in Pittsburgh is the Three Rivers Arts Festival held?
The answer changes by year, the festival holding no single fairground or street address in any layer. Its 2026 pages place it at Arts Landing in the Cultural District, its long-term home; 2025 sat for one year on riverfront lots at the 15th Street Plaza; 2024 lined Fort Duquesne Boulevard. The Trust’s Liberty Avenue office address is never the grounds.
Is there camping at the Three Rivers Arts Festival?
No camping term exists for this festival: no campsite, tent, recreational-vehicle or overnight-parking arrangement appears in its pages or any modern programme layer. Its own travel material deals in hotels, and no Pittsburgh-area campground, state park or RV park is a festival facility; no other event’s camping terms may be borrowed.
What to Expect From the Next Allegheny County Pennsylvania Three Rivers Arts Festival
How often is Allegheny County Pennsylvania Three Rivers Arts Festival held?
The festival is annual. Documented modern editions run in 2024, 2025 and 2026, billed in their layers as the sixty-fifth, sixty-sixth annual and sixty-seventh annual.
When is the next Allegheny County Pennsylvania Three Rivers Arts Festival?
The newest edition the record documents is 2026, held June 5 to 7 and June 11 to 14 at Arts Landing, and no dates for a following edition appear in the layers behind this article. The standing season is early June, and the next span and bill will arrive in the festival’s own pages, not carried over.
Will the dates change?
They already have, repeatedly: ten straight days from May 31 to June 9 in 2024, four days from June 5 to 8 in 2025 under construction pressure, and two weekend blocks with a three-day midweek pause in 2026. Future dates should be read in each edition’s own announcement.
Founded in 1960, still free, still downtown: that is the festival in one line.
